This is the article written for supporting other students who are suffering with TOEFL, IELTs, GRE, GMAT, or even the future. I must say that I am the one who is extremely worried about the future. Before coming to the United States to follow my dream, to be a graduate student in pharmaceutical programs, I had struggled against these qualified exams for at least five months. Crying, suffering, and frustration all came to my life; I lost weight, obsessed with searching lists of universities where I could apply, and spent almost everyday with TOEFL and GRE. ! !
Eventually, I found that “ English is a skill, not an ability” ! !
What is the distinction between ‘skill’ and ‘ability’? Skills are learning, whereas abilities require both learning and genetic factors. And what makes English a skill? It is because I totally believe that everyone can learn English no matter how old he/she is, or where he/she is
from. Learning English takes time to practice. Without falling by the wayside, we can stand on top of the hill.! !
I graduated Bachelor of science in pharmacy from Chulalongkorn University with first class honor. But the honor did not guarantee my TOEFL and GRE scores at all. Someone asked me why I had to spend four months for TOEFL and a month for GRE. I had never thought that before as well. However, English skills, which are reading, listening, speaking, and writing, are worth investing four months. I have developed my skills little by little through those days.! ! !
“Knowledge is what knowledge is about”
This quote always comes into my mind when I do not want to read or even touch English books any more. Why? It is because we learn English for using English, not only for
taking an exam.! !
A lot of people frequently asked me how to improve speaking skill; my answer was that I recorded my voices on iPhone, and tried to correct every single pronunciation by myself. I listened to a dictionary
application and tried to make similar accents. Then, I recorded my voices again. Also, when I watched
American movies on youtube, I wrote interesting sentences and pronounced those sentences as well. Watching movies or news is really useful because they broaden the horizons of knowledge. You
might wonder how writing and reading skills can be improved; due to the story of movies and news. I got basic information and plenty of vocabulary in unfamiliar topics, such as astronomy, American history, and geography. Thus, I read and wrote passages easier and faster.! !
Talking about GRE, it depends on which major you choose. Some programs like engineering, and health sciences focus on Mathematics rather than the Verbal section, whereas some require only the total scores. As a result, you should know universities’ admission requirements first and then concentrate on those requirements. ! !
Why did someone get very high scores on both TOEFL and GRE but he/she was not accepted by graduate schools? In order to attend graduate schools, there is ‘statement of purpose (SOP)’ Which is more significant than qualified exams. Spending your time on SOP is worth 100 scores on TOEFL iBT. Explaining yourself, showing your abilities, and specifying your interests as much as possible are the best way to write your own SOP.! !
Until now, I am a CELOP student at Boston University for Science and Technology English course. I realized the value of spending time for English, because of being at the highest level of CELOP and fluently communicating with others in English. Also, I have been accepted by Stevens Institute of Technology for M.S. in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Engineering at New Jersey. As we know that New Jersey is the hub of pharmaceutical manufacturing, it would be a great opportunity to study Master’s degree there. Choosing the major I love, without concerning much about the reputation as others do, is the
way I choose to follow my dream.! !
