Levels:

On the first day of the program, you will take an exam to determine your level of instruction. You study in classes with other students at similar levels.

AIEP starts with an English skills test to place you in one of 9 instructional levels: 100 (Basic) through 108 (Advanced).

Please note: ALC uses its own English skills test to determine placement. TOEFL iBT® scores listed at left are for comparison/ information purposes only.

Academic Intensive English Program (AIEP)

Course Length

• 10 weeks in winter, spring, and fall; 6 or 12 weeks in summer
• 23 class sessions weekly, each class 50 minutes
• 5 hours a day, 9am-3pm, Monday-Thursday; 3 hours 9am-12pm Friday

AIEP Dates & Fees

Academic Intensive English Program (AIEP)

Designed for participants 18 years of age or older, AIEP specializes in English for academic purposes with emphasis on all skills, especially reading, writing, and TOEFL preparation. The program requires a student (F-1) visa and includes twenty-three, 50-minute class sessions per week, with five sessions per day Monday through Thursday and three sessions on Friday.

• Academic Advising: quarterly orientations regarding American universities, UCLA Extension certificate programs, and assistance with application procedures and forms
• Cost of books, housing, transportation, and other expenses are not included in AEIP fees.
  
• Injury and Sickness Insurance: allows students to visit a hospital or clinic if medical attention is needed due to an injury or sickness (Please note: Insurance prices are subject to periodic increases, and permanent residents of the United States will not be eligible for this insurance.)
• Language/Computer Lab: up to 8 hours of extra, after-school access to state-of-art language practice, email, and Internet
• Housing Details: information is provided about finding a place to live (Please note: UCLA on-campus housing is available for intensive programs in the summer only. Prices for 2018 summer on-campus housing have not yet been determined. Look for detailed summer housing information and pricing in early 2018.)
• Language Exchange Program: opportunities to meet members of the local community and UCLA for conversation practice
• UCLA Recreation Facilities: access to many of UCLA’s outstanding sports and recreational facilities
• Express Mail: application and program materials sent via DHL express mail
• Certificate of Completion: an attractive certificate presented to participants upon completion of the program

Intensive English Communication Program (IECP)

Enroll in IECP if you want to:

• Focus on English speaking and communication skills for personal or professional reasons
• Gain confidence in your ability to communicate with native speakers.
• Emphasize listening and speaking skills
• Visit sites outside the classroom to reinforce instruction

IECP Dates & Fees

Intensive English Communication Program (IECP)

Designed for participants 18 years of age or older, IECP specializes in English for day to day communication with emphasis on listening and speaking. IECP also provides speech exercises focused on specific academic, business, and cultural topics. The program requires an F-1 student visa and includes twenty 50-minute class sessions per week, with five sessions per day Monday through Thursday.

A nonrefundable $150 application fee is required; the application fee is valid for one year. The Student Services Fee is required for all students and all programs. Dates and fees are subject to change. Recommended application deadlines, click here

TOEFL/IELTS WaiverStudents who successfully complete advanced-level AIEP courses may be able to waive TOEFL and IELTS tests at the following partnered institutions:

Students who successfully complete advanced-level AIEP courses will have acquired academic and English-skills to pursue further studies. The UCLA Extension American Language Center (ALC) has established conditional admission agreements with a number of colleges and universities. These institutions have agreed to waive TOEFL, IELTS, and other standardized language proficiency assessments if students have successfully completed an advanced level of the ALC Academic Intensive English Program (AIEP) with a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average). Community College partners accept completion of level 105, and university partners accept 107 unless otherwise specified.

UCLA Student Resources

Check with your program to find out how to obtain access to a variety of UCLA recreational resources:

• Los Angeles Tennis Center: 8 lighted tennis courts.
• Sunset Canyon Recreation Center: 25- and 50-meter pools with picnic/barbecue areas.
• John Wooden Recreation and Sports Center: Gym & fitness center, racquetball, basketball, and rock climbing.
• Marina Aquatic Center: Located at the Pacific Ocean, offers sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and other nautical sports.

You will need to show your verification letter and a photo ID to get a UCLA Recreation ID card. For a small additional cost, you can also take classes in fitness, sports, dance, martial arts, tennis, and swimming. This is a good way to have fun, learn new skills, relieve stress, and meet Americans students with similar interests.

Dashew Center for International Students & Scholars:

The Dashew Center provides services, programs, and activities for foreign students and is a great way to increase social contacts. Located on the UCLA campus in the Bradley International Hall, 417 Charles E. Young Dr. West, (310) 825-1681.

Library Cards:

The UCLA Library, with more than seven million volumes, ranks among the top three university research libraries in North America. You can read books and magazines or study there without an ID card or a library card. To take books home, you need a library card, which you can get for $25 at the front desk of the Research or College (Powell) Library.

The Westwood branch of the Los Angeles Public Library  provides free access to computer workstations;  you can get a free library  card with 2 pieces of ID or a CA driver license.

Religious Services/Houses of Worship

The Los Angeles community is diverse, with places of worship for persons of nearly all faiths. UCLA student groups also represent many of the major faiths. The University Religious Conference at UCLA can help you contact religious groups on campus.

UCLA Social & Culture Clubs

UCLA’s Center for Student Programming (CSP) lists hundreds of different clubs and interest groups open to all students. Many have an international and cultural emphasis such as the International Folk Dance Club, the Korean American Student Association, and the Chicano Latino Film Festival
