Our mission at the Center for English Language at Baruch College’s Division of Continuing and Professional Studies is to help students develop the English language skills needed for academic, professional, and social purposes. • Academic Intensive English. Prepares non-native English speakers for university or graduate school in the US. Students in this full-time program may qualify for an F-1 international student visa.

  The Academic Intensive English Program is designed to prepare non-native English speakers for university or graduate school in the United States. Students in this full-time program may qualify for an F-1 international student visa.

  Students receive 20 hours per week of core instruction in writing, reading, listening and speaking. Students also choose an elective from the General ESL or ESL Test Prep programs. Electives may include: grammar, vocabulary and idioms, academic vocabulary, pronunciation, accent reduction, public speaking, understanding the business world, American pop culture, iBT TOEFL preparation, and CUNY Assessment Test (CAT-W and CAT-R) preparation.

  The Academic Intensive English Program also provides a variety of services, support, and activities:

  • Academic and immigration counseling

  • Access to the university’s library, computer labs, and gym

  • Workshops on US higher education, international student scholarships, volunteering, and more

  • Culture hour with guest speakers and language games

  • Tutoring

  • Discussion club

  • ESL showcase, summer festivals, and winter carnival

  • Student newsletter

  • Field trips to NYC museums, parks, Broadway shows, and other cultural attractions

• General ESL. Convenient day and evening classes for students who wish to improve their language skills, and learn about US culture.

• Business ESL. Designed to help new and seasoned professionals develop their communication skills.

• ESL Test Prep. High-quality, interactive test preparation for the CUNY Assessment Test (CAT-W and CAT-R), GMAT, GRE, and iBT TOEFL.

• English Express. A two-week intensive English program, designed to prepare students for the Certificate in American Business Practices (CABP) program

All of our programs feature:

• Integrated approach to language instruction. Ensures that students gain a foundation in language structure, and more importantly, become comfortable and confident in communicating with native speakers.
• Focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Class activities incorporate grammar, vocabulary, and culture. Homework focuses on short writing assignments that support classroom activities.
• Small class size. Students receive individualized attention from our highly qualified, knowledgeable, enthusiastic faculty.
• State-of-the-art language lab. Students can practice their language skills and explore films, television, music, magazines, and websites.
